Tesla Model Y Is the World's Best-Selling Car Again — and the Gap Is Widening

The Tesla Model Y is the world's best-selling vehicle through the first seven months of 2026, according to the latest data from Focus2Move, with sales climbing 19.6% compared with the same period last year. After three consecutive years as the globe's top-selling car, the electric SUV is now bidding for a fourth — and pulling away from its closest rival.

The growth moved the Model Y ahead of the Toyota Corolla in the global rankings, with the Ford F-Series, Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V rounding out the top five. The comparison with the RAV4, the Model Y's most direct SUV competitor, is the starkest: Model Y sales are up roughly 20% through July while RAV4 sales have fallen about 25%, opening a gap of approximately 200,000 vehicles since the end of 2025.

Why the Model Y keeps winning

The Model Y's dominance is not a single-market story. The SUV has topped charts across Europe, led imported-car rankings in Japan, and remains Tesla's volume engine in North America. In the United States, S&P Global Mobility registrations show the Model Y reaching 184,688 registrations in the first half of 2026, up 23% year-over-year — nearly 70% of Tesla's total U.S. registrations in the period.

Japan delivers the latest milestone

Tesla Japan, citing JATO Dynamics registration data, says the Model Y finished the first half of 2026 as the most-registered individual model among all foreign brands in the country — not just among EVs. The Model Y accounted for approximately 48% of foreign-brand EV registrations, led foreign-brand registrations in 19 of Japan's 47 prefectures, and finished in the top five in 38. Tesla had already surpassed its full-year 2025 sales in Japan before the half-year mark.

What it means for Canadian buyers

For Canadians, the global numbers translate into practical effects. The Model Y is Canada's best-selling EV and tops Canadian EV search interest — and global demand is exactly what drives Canadian delivery wait times, which stretch well into 2027 for some trims. A model that is simultaneously winning Europe, Japan and North America means Canadian allocations compete with every other market for the same production lines.

The other Canadian angle is resale: the world's best-selling vehicle is also the vehicle with the deepest parts, service and third-party-support ecosystem — a meaningful factor when shopping a used EV and projecting long-term ownership costs.
