Canada’s EV Market Is Bouncing Back — But Not Everywhere at Once

Canada’s electric vehicle market shows signs of recovery in 2026, but the rebound is highly uneven across provinces, according to Electric Autonomy Canada’s latest analysis of registration data and charging infrastructure rollout.

Quebec and BC Lead the Charge

Quebec continues to outperform other provinces with EV registrations growing at 18% year-over-year, driven by strong provincial rebates and charging infrastructure investments. British Columbia follows closely with 15% growth, supported by its CEVforBC program and expanding DC fast-charging network along major corridors.

Prairies and Atlantic Lag Behind

Alberta and Saskatchewan show minimal growth at just 2-3%, despite federal incentives, due to limited provincial support and charging deserts outside major cities. Atlantic Canada sees mixed results, with Nova Scotia leading the region at 8% growth while New Brunswick and Newfoundland lag at under 4%.

Charging Infrastructure Disparities

The charging gap mirrors adoption patterns: Quebec leads with 1 public charger per 24 EVs, followed by BC at 1:28. Alberta struggles with 1:67 ratio, and Atlantic provinces average 1:52. Urban centers like Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto show healthy ratios, but rural areas remain severely underserved.

Ontario’s Mixed Performance

Ontario presents a complex picture: the GTA shows strong 12% growth, but northern and eastern regions lag at 4-5%. Recent provincial policy shifts, including the scrapping of the EV sales mandate, have created uncertainty that may be slowing fleet and commercial adoption despite strong consumer interest.
