Stellantis is exploring importing China-built Jeep electric vehicles to Canada, even as its Brampton Assembly Plant remains shuttered and more than 2,000 Canadian auto workers face an uncertain future.
Stellantis could soon be importing Chinese-built Jeep electric vehicles to Canada, even as its Brampton Assembly Plant remains shuttered and more than 2,000 Canadian auto workers face an uncertain future.
China-built Jeep EVs targeted for Canada
According to Automotive News Canada, a Stellantis joint venture with Chinese automaker Dongfeng plans to begin producing two electrified Jeep models in 2027, with Canada among the potential export markets. The United States is notably absent from those plans.
The move comes as the Brampton Assembly Plant, which produced the Jeep Cherokee until its closure earlier this year, remains idle. Stellantis has not confirmed a restart timeline for the facility.
Policy pressure in Ontario
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has signaled opposition to importing knockdown kits for assembly in the province. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly has said any new auto investments will prioritize Canada's supply chain, including Canadian labour and parts suppliers.
Unifor has raised serious concerns about the impact on workers if imported vehicles bypass domestic production.
