Buying a Used EV in Canada? Battery Health Checks Are Becoming the New Normal

With lease returns flooding the market and Canada's EV registrations up 22.3%, third-party battery diagnostic reports are emerging alongside traditional vehicle history checks. Here is what a battery report costs, what it reveals, and why Canadian buyers shouldn't skip it.

A traditional vehicle history report was built for combustion vehicles: title transfers, collision records, odometer logs, liens and open recalls. On a used electric vehicle with 80,000 km on the clock, that report covers roughly half of what matters — and says nothing at all about the single most expensive component in the car, the battery pack.

That gap is starting to close. Through 2026, a more structured layer of battery diagnostics has begun appearing next to the traditional history report rather than replacing it, as The Seeker recently examined. Third-party services connect through the OBD port or pull data from manufacturer telemetry and hand back a capacity report showing how much of the pack's original health remains — the number that ultimately decides what a used EV is worth.

Why the timing matters in Canada

The used EV pipeline is filling fast. Roughly 300,000 EVs returned to dealer lots in the United States in 2026 at the end of their lease terms — about triple the 123,000 that came back in 2025 — and most are 2022 or 2023 models with odometers near 40,000 km. Canada's own market is growing in parallel: the Canada Energy Regulator recorded 22.3% growth in EV registrations through the first half of the year, and Ottawa's $2.275 billion incentive program has pulled more buyers toward electrics since February. More new EVs sold in 2022 and 2023 means more used EVs on Canadian lots in 2026 and 2027 — including American lease returns that flow north across the border.

Why the battery is the whole story

Two used EVs of the same model and mileage can carry identical history reports while their batteries sit worlds apart — one at 93% of original capacity, one at 78%. A replacement pack costs $5,000 to $15,000 depending on chemistry, and the conventional report does not even gesture at the difference.

  • Usage history drives degradation. A pack that baked through hot summers on DC fast chargers degrades very differently from one that charged slowly overnight in a cool garage — and no history report captures any of it.
  • Averages hide variance. Fleet telematics data puts typical degradation near 1.8% of capacity per year, with most modern packs clearing 200,000 km above 80% capacity. But your specific vehicle can sit well outside that band.
  • Warranty coverage diverges at the border. Every new EV sold in the US carries a federally mandated 8-year/160,000-km battery warranty; Canada never adopted an equivalent federal minimum, leaving buyers of imported lease returns to arrange their own third-party verification.

What a winter test drive won't show you

The dashboard range estimate can flatter a tired pack in mild weather. A buyer who sees 350 km of estimated range during a September test drive may watch it collapse toward 220 km on a February highway run at speed — and the difference between those two numbers is entirely the buyer's problem once the paperwork is signed. A battery health report is the only pre-purchase tool that quantifies it.

What Canadian buyers should do

Run the conventional history checks you always would — title washing, hidden accident damage and odometer fraud did not disappear with the engine. Then add the EV-specific layer:

  • Ask the seller for a current battery state-of-health reading, obtained via OBD scan or the manufacturer's own diagnostic telemetry. Certified pre-owned programs have begun requiring these readings before listing an EV, particularly on vehicles returning from lease.
  • If the seller cannot produce one, pay for an independent third-party battery inspection before committing — it is a fraction of the cost of the regret.
  • Check whether the vehicle's battery warranty remains in force and transfers to you, especially on US-sourced lease returns.

The verification infrastructure is still catching up to the volume of used EVs arriving on Canadian lots. Until it fully does, the battery report is the one document no used-EV buyer in this country should close without.
