EV-specific winter tires are designed for the unique demands of heavy battery-powered vehicles — higher load ratings, lower rolling resistance to protect range, and rubber compounds that stay flexible at Canadian winter temperatures. Why winter tires matter more on EVs

EVs deliver instant torque to all four wheels through software, which is fantastic in summer but treacherous on ice without proper rubber. A conventional all-season tire on an EV in winter can lose grip before the traction control system fully reacts, especially under hard acceleration from a stop. Winter tires maintain flexibility at -25°C and below, which preserves the contact patch that delivers grip. EV-specific winter tires minimize this penalty through low-rolling-resistance compounds and asymmetric tread designs that balance snow grip with efficiency.

Most Canadian insurers offer a winter tire discount — typically 5–15% off the collision and comprehensive premium — for vehicles equipped with matched winter tires installed during the designated winter period. The discount varies by province and insurer; Ontario and Quebec have the most consistent winter tire discount programs. The discount alone pays for 30–50% of a winter tire set over its lifetime.

Installation timing

Install winter tires when temperatures consistently drop below 7°C — that's the threshold where all-season rubber starts hardening and losing grip. In most Canadian markets, that's late October to mid-November. Switch back to all-seasons in April when temperatures consistently rise above 7°C again. Running winters in summer wears them out faster and reduces their winter effectiveness when you need them.
