Tesla Opens a Third Nanaimo Supercharger — Vancouver Island Network Hits 96 Stalls

Nanaimo now has three Tesla Supercharger stations, making the mid-island city Tesla's biggest charging hub on Vancouver Island. The newest location opened this week in the city's north end at Northridge Village, 5800 Turner Road, with eight V4 Supercharger posts capable of delivering up to 325 kW.

Construction at the Turner Road site began in April. The station is open to non-Tesla EVs equipped with a NACS adapter, continuing the pattern of new Canadian locations launching with open access from day one.

What it costs

Per Tesla's website, Tesla owners pay $0.21/kWh during off-peak hours and $0.29/kWh from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. Non-Tesla EVs using a NACS adapter pay $0.30/kWh off-peak and $0.40/kWh during the day. The off-peak window makes overnight and early-morning charging the obvious play for island drivers who can shift their stops.

The opening pushes Vancouver Island to nine Supercharger stations totalling 96 stalls — a long way from the single 72 kW Urban Supercharger in Victoria that served the island for years. Recent additions have unlocked travel across the island:

• Nanaimo: three stations, including the new eight-stall V4 site on Turner Road
• North island: Courtenay and Campbell River stations opened the region to Supercharging
• West coast: Port Alberni and Tofino stations serve the Pacific side of the island
• Capital region: Victoria, where the island network began

What's next for the island

Ucluelet is on Tesla's future plans after winning Supercharger Voting in Q4 2024. And in the latest round of Supercharger voting launched this week, seven Vancouver Island locations are up for vote — including sites as far north as Port McNeill. BC Hydro has also added public fast charging on the island, including a 400 kW station in Nanaimo, giving drivers of other brands growing cover in the same corridors.

For EV drivers planning an island loop — Highway 19 to Campbell River, Highway 4 to Tofino — the map now supports the trip with margin to spare, where two years ago it required careful charging choreography.
