FSD V14 Lite Is Finally Close for HW3 Model S and Model X Owners in Canada

Tesla owners in Canada driving older Hardware 3 (HW3) Model S and Model X vehicles are close to finally receiving FSD V14 Lite, months after the software reached every other HW3 car. The strongest signal yet came from Tesla's Vice President of AI Software Ashok Elluswamy, who — asked for a timeline at the Cybercab launch in Austin last week — replied, "Oh, I thought it was supposed to go out last week."

The quote comes from Ryan McCaffrey, host of the Ride the Lightning Tesla podcast, who put the question to Elluswamy directly at the September 3 event. Reporting by Drive Tesla Canada on September 8 relayed the exchange, which is unofficial — Tesla has made no public statement on the S/X timeline — but it is the first substantive indication that the rollout is days or weeks away rather than months.

What V14 Lite brings to HW3 cars

FSD V14 Lite is the pared-down build of Tesla's V14 autonomy software developed specifically for the older HW3 (AI3) computer, which lacks the headroom of the HW4 system shipping in current vehicles. According to Drive Tesla Canada, the build carries over many of V14's improvements, including:

• Better intersections and merges, with smoother behaviour in complex crossings.
• Improved pedestrian and cut-in handling, plus refined navigation logic.
• Smoother steering and fewer unnecessary slowdowns — the most common owner complaints about earlier HW3 releases.

The software began reaching HW3 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles earlier this year and expanded across Canada and the United States in July. Model S and Model X owners with HW3 — the buyers who paid for Full Self-Driving earliest — have been waiting ever since, with no communication from Tesla on timing.

Why the S/X wait matters in Canada

The Hardware 3 population in Canada skews older and more loyal: these are 2019–2023 cars bought by early FSD adopters, many of whom purchased the software when it cost far less than today. Tesla's upgrade path for HW3 has been the subject of a running dispute — owners of the older computer were told an upgrade would come, then saw V14's full feature set land on HW4 first. V14 Lite is the compromise: same software generation, scaled to the older hardware.

Elluswamy's "last week" comment does not guarantee an immediate release, and Drive Tesla Canada notes fans were quick to point out previous Elluswamy timelines that slipped. But if Tesla's AI chief believed the deployment had already happened, HW3 Model S and X owners may not have much longer to wait.

What to watch for

Canadian HW3 Model S/X owners should watch their mobile app and in-car software tab over the coming weeks for the V14 Lite release notes. As with the Model 3/Y deployment, expect a staged rollout — early access first, then wider waves — rather than a single-day push. And as always with FSD, the software remains supervised: the driver is responsible for the vehicle at all times, regardless of hardware generation.
