The Mercedes-Benz CLA 350 4Matic just drove 385 miles (620 km) on a single charge in Edmunds' standardized real-world range test — 73 miles beyond its official 312-mile EPA rating. The result, reported by InsideEVs, continues a pattern for Mercedes' new electric sedan: the single-motor CLA 250+ went 434 miles in the same test last year, becoming the cheapest car ever tested by the publication to break the 400-mile barrier.

Efficiency beat the sticker too. The dual-motor CLA 350 recorded 25.7 kWh per 100 miles against an official 29 kWh, and its charging peak hit 349 kW — 29 kW above what Mercedes advertises.

Why the gap exists

Edmunds' route is not the EPA's. The publication splits its test 60 percent city / 40 percent highway at an average of 40 mph, versus the EPA procedure's 55/45 split — a gentler profile that favours efficient powertrains. That explains part of the margin, but not all of it: the CLA 350 outdistanced the Tesla Model 3 RWD (339 miles), BMW i4 eDrive40 (292 miles), and Hyundai Ioniq 6 RWD (343 miles) on the identical course. Both CLA variants share an 85-kWh pack; the 250+ makes 268 hp from a single rear motor, while the 350 4Matic adds a front motor for 349 hp total.

The Canadian translation problem

Canadian buyers face two adjustments before trusting any of these figures. First, Natural Resources Canada's ratings differ from the EPA's — NRCan five-cycle ratings typically run closer to real-world results than EPA figures, shrinking the headline gap. A car that beats its EPA rating by 23 percent in California conditions may simply land on its NRCan number in a February commute.

The honest takeaway: the CLA's test results signal a genuinely efficient platform — 25.7 kWh/100 miles is strong for a 349-hp sedan — rather than a licence to plan road trips off the bigger number. Canadian shoppers should anchor on NRCan ratings, then treat real-world surplus as winter buffer.
