FortisBC Adds 180 kW Fast Chargers in Kelowna and Rock Creek

Electric vehicle drivers in the Okanagan and Boundary Country have new fast-charging options as of August 24: FortisBC has added three high-powered stations — at Rutland Centennial Park and the Okanagan Heritage Museum in Kelowna, plus the Rock Creek Visitor Centre. The Kelowna sites deliver up to 180 kW; the Rock Creek unit caps at 150 kW.

The stations are built for more than sedans. Each serves passenger vehicles and medium-duty electric vehicles — delivery trucks, large SUVs, and panel vans — with two charging ports per station allowing two vehicles to charge simultaneously. Payment is contactless, and the ports support the North American charging standard (NACS), meaning Tesla and the newest non-Tesla EVs plug in natively.

A 1,000-km charging corridor

With the additions, FortisBC operates 45 fast-charging stations across 22 sites in its Southern Interior electricity service area, connecting 20 communities over more than 1,000 kilometres of highway. The utility has also completed accessibility upgrades across its charging network: improved lighting, accessible parking stalls, and paving at most locations.

For road-trippers, the Rock Creek site is the strategic one — it sits on Highway 3, the southern route linking the Okanagan to the Kootenays and, ultimately, the Trans-Canada corridor east. Highway 3 has long been one of B.C.'s thinner fast-charging stretches, and a 150 kW dual-port station there materially improves the cross-province network map.

The 180 kW Kelowna units also matter beyond raw speed: chargers that size can add roughly 150–200 km of range in 15 minutes on a compatible EV, which is the threshold where charging stops feel like coffee breaks rather than schedule items.

What it means for BC drivers

The expansion continues a pattern of electric utilities — rather than pure-play charging networks — filling B.C.'s rural gaps, where provincial rebates have pushed infrastructure toward highway corridors and smaller communities. For Okanagan residents, the practical win is redundancy: more sites means less queueing at peak summer travel times in one of Canada's fastest-EV-adopting regions.
