Hyundai Sets U.S. Sales Record in October — But IONIQ 6 Disappears, IONIQ 9 Slides 47%

Hyundai Motor America posted a record 73,452 U.S. sales in October 2026, up 5% from 70,118 a year earlier, according to the company's monthly release. Retail sales climbed 9% to 62,646 units. But beneath the headline record, the EV lineup tells a story of divergence: the IONIQ 5 gained 21% while the IONIQ 6 sold zero units and the IONIQ 9 fell 47%.

IONIQ 6: discontinued in the U.S. for 2026

The zero IONIQ 6 sales are not a soft month — Hyundai has discontinued the standard sedan in the United States for 2026, citing weak demand and tariffs on the Korean-built vehicle. Only the high-performance IONIQ 6 N remains on sale in the U.S. market. The refreshed IONIQ 6 is still headed to Canada as a 2027 model, making the North American split a key variable for Canadian buyers watching the lineup.

Hybrids carry the record

Hyundai's U.S. year-to-date total of 770,916 vehicles is up 3%, but the growth engine is hybrid: hybrid sales increased 50% year over year. The record October is effectively a hybrid story, with the Tucson, Santa Fe and Santa Cruz plug-in hybrids driving volume while the pure-EV lineup contracts.

Canadian angle

In Canada, the picture is similar but with different numbers. The Kona EV led Hyundai's Canadian EV lineup with 646 October sales (up 65%), while the IONIQ 5 declined 6% and the IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 9 fell 99% and 51% respectively. The IONIQ 6's Canadian collapse parallels the U.S. discontinuation, but the refreshed 2027 IONIQ 6 is expected to arrive in Canada with updated range and a revised price point.
