chargingBYD and Iberdrola Launch Joint Charging Bundle in Spain — Wallbox, Tariff, and Public Charging Discounts
BYD and Iberdrola's 'Plan Recarga Inteligente' bundles a subsidized wallbox, a dedicated 25¢/kWh tariff, and public charging discounts for BYD owners in Spain — a model Canada could watch closely.
BYD has partnered with Iberdrola to launch "Plan Recarga Inteligente," a comprehensive charging bundle available to BYD electric and plug-in hybrid buyers in Spain. The package includes a subsidized home wallbox, a dedicated electricity tariff, and discounts on public charging — a bundled approach that mirrors what North American buyers have been asking for.
What's in the bundle
- Home wallbox at half price: BYD buyers who arrange installation through Iberdrola pay only 50% of the market price, a saving of approximately €969 (~$1,500 CAD).
- Dedicated tariff: The "Plan Recarga Inteligente" electricity plan offers a rate of €0.25/kWh (taxes included), with a home-charging discount equivalent to the energy needed for 10,000 km of driving per year for three years.
- Public charging perks: A six-month 50% discount at selected Iberdrola public charging locations (12,000+ operational points), followed by a 12-month free membership in "Plan Recarga +" (normally €9.99/month) that provides 20% off charging sessions.
Part of a broader BYD energy partnership strategy
This is not an isolated deal. BYD announced a similar bundle with E.ON in Germany earlier this week, and has been partnered with Octopus Energy in the UK since mid-2025, where that partnership includes bidirectional (V2G) charging. The Spain–Iberdrola deal is the third national rollout of what BYD is clearly positioning as a differentiator: the car plus the charging ecosystem, sold as one package.
Why Canadian buyers should care
BYD has been testing Canadian waters with the Seal U and Sealion 7, and the brand's strategy of bundling charging infrastructure with vehicle purchase is a model that could translate to North America. In Canada, where home charging installation costs remain a top barrier (typically $1,500–$3,000 for a Level 2 install), a subsidized-wallbox-plus-tariff bundle would directly address the #1 reason cited by prospective buyers who don't have garage access or who face condo board approvals. Canadian utilities like Enbridge Gas, Hydro One, and BC Hydro have similar dynamic-rate products that could be packaged in a comparable way if a BYD–utility partnership materialized here.
For now, the Spain launch is a signal: OEMs are moving beyond selling cars to selling charging ecosystems. Canadian buyers should watch whether BYD or other importers replicate this model domestically.
