salesBYD October Sales Hit 490,168 NEVs — BEVs Top 300,000 for the First Time
BYD sold 490,168 NEVs in October 2026, up 11% year-over-year, with battery-electric passenger vehicles crossing 300,000 units for the first time. What it signals for Canada's incoming Chinese EV competition.
BYD posted its highest monthly sales of 2026 in October, moving 490,168 new energy vehicles (NEVs) — a 10.97% year-over-year increase and a 5.74% gain over September, according to company data released on November 1 via CnEVPost. The figure marks the company's sixth consecutive month of year-over-year growth and its eighth consecutive monthly increase.
Record BEV Month
The standout number is in the pure-electric segment: BYD's battery electric passenger vehicle sales reached 305,743 units in October, up 37.38% year-over-year and setting a record for the third consecutive month. This is the first time the company has topped 300,000 BEV sales in a single month, underscoring the shift from plug-in hybrids toward pure battery-electric demand in domestic and export markets.
Year-over-year growth did slow from 16.98% in September, easing for the third consecutive month. October's total was the highest since December 2024 and the fourth-highest on record, trailing only the three months of Q4 2024.
What the Numbers Mean for Canada
BYD is actively building a Canadian retail footprint, with roughly 20 dealerships planned starting in the Greater Toronto Area. The company has also been linked to discussions involving General Motors' former CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, though no production agreement has been announced.
With the Canadian Chinese-EV import quota now allowing 49,000 vehicles per year at a reduced 6.1% tariff, BYD's record production run and growing export pipeline (up 137% year-over-year in Q3) suggest Canadian buyers could see BYD models on dealer lots by mid-2027. The company's Canadian website is already live, and test vehicles have been staged in the Toronto area.
- October total: 490,168 NEVs (up 10.97% YoY, up 5.74% MoM)
- BEV passenger vehicles: 305,743 units (up 37.38% YoY — record)
- Q3 export surge: 550,704 NEVs exported, up 137% from 232,806 a year ago
- Canadian entry: ~20 dealerships in GTA, possible Ontario assembly plant
The question for Canadian buyers is no longer whether BYD arrives, but which models come first and at what price. With the quota window open and BYD's production at a record pace, the timeline is compressing.
