The battery is the part every shopper worries about and almost no owner thinks about after year one. Here's what actual degradation data — including from cold climates — says about how long an EV battery really lasts, and what Canadians should do differently.
The headline numbers
Large fleet studies consistently show modern EVs losing roughly 1.5–2.5% of usable capacity per year, with the fastest drop in year one and a gentler slope after. That means a typical 2020s-era pack should still hold 80–85% of its original range after a decade — beyond most owners' tenure with the car. Cold-climate fleets show somewhat faster degradation, but the gap is smaller than feared, and thermal management matters far more than geography.
What kills packs early
Three things: sustained DC fast charging (heat is the enemy), routinely parking at 100% or sitting at near-zero for months, and heat without liquid cooling (the early Nissan Leaf lesson). Notice what isn't on the list: cold itself. A Canadian winter slows the battery temporarily but doesn't meaningfully age it — the pack just needs to be warmed to charge efficiently.
The warranty is your floor
Canadian law requires minimum 8-year/130,000-km battery warranties on new EVs, with a degradation guarantee (usually 70–75% capacity) baked in. That means the single most expensive failure is underwritten for nearly a decade. Check the fine print on used purchases: warranty transfer terms vary by manufacturer, and a battery health report tells you what guarantee you're actually buying.
Habits that stretch battery life
Charge to 80–90% for daily driving and only to 100% before road trips. Prefer Level 2 at home over repeated fast charging. Don't store the car for months at full or empty — 50% is the storage sweet spot. In winter, precondition while plugged in: it warms the pack for both driving efficiency and fast-charge speeds without spending battery on it. These are small habits; compounded over years they're the difference between a 12% and an 18% decade-old degradation figure.
And after the car?
Retired EV packs increasingly get second lives as home storage and grid buffers — including pilot programs by Canadian utilities — before final recycling, which recovers the majority of lithium, nickel and cobalt. The battery's story doesn't end with the car, which changes the long-term cost math in EVs' favour.
The bottom line
Treat the battery as an 8-year-guaranteed component that realistically lasts the car's life. Buy thermal management, charge gently, and let the warranty do the worrying.
