Volvo's EX60 and EX90 Will Warn Canadian Drivers About Moose on the Road Ahead

Volvo is updating the connected safety technology in its EX60 and EX90 electric SUVs with real-time hazard alerts — and for Canadian drivers, the headline feature is Large Animal Alert, which can warn of a moose or other large animal detected on or near the road ahead.

The alerts work by pooling anonymized data shared from other Volvo cars. When one connected Volvo detects a hazard, drivers in following vehicles get warned before they reach it. Volvo says more than one million of its cars globally have activated connected safety tech.

The four new hazard alerts

• Large Animal Alert — warns of a large animal, such as a moose, detected on or near the road ahead
• Vulnerable Road User Alert — warns of pedestrians and cyclists detected on or near highways
• Roadwork Alert — warns when roadwork is detected ahead
• Accident Ahead Alert — warns of crashes further ahead, using real-time data from connected Volvos or traffic management centres

The feature set carries obvious weight in Canada, where moose and deer collisions are a seasonal hazard on northern and rural highways. Volvo quotes Åsa Haglund, head of Volvo Cars Safety Centre: "Every time a Volvo car shares safety intelligence, it helps other drivers prepare earlier to avoid accidents and feel safer." The company frames the updates as a step toward its vision of zero collisions.

Canada gets the alerts — with one European exception

The new features will be available on the EX60 and EX90 in Canada and other markets, as well as the ES90, which is not sold here. One gap remains: in Europe, Volvos can also share hazard data with Data for Road Safety, a system that passes warnings between vehicles from different brands. Canadian vehicles don't yet join that cross-brand exchange.

Part of a broader software update

The safety features arrive as part of a larger over-the-air software update that also brings Spatial Audio support for Apple CarPlay to EX90 vehicles equipped with Dolby Atmos. Volvo says timing of the new features' arrival will vary by vehicle.
