Tesla Model Y L: Canada-Bound Three-Row SUV Sets Real-World Range Record
Tesla's long-wheelbase Model Y L beat its own range estimate by almost 12 percent in Edmunds testing. Here is what the six-seat SUV's 576 km result means for Canadian families waiting for a third-row Tesla.
Tesla's Model Y has been Canada's best-selling EV for years, but it has never offered a third row that a Canadian family could actually use. That changes with the Model Y L, the long-wheelbase, six-seat version of the crossover that Tesla built for China and is now bringing to North America. And if a new independent range test is any indication, the bigger battery was worth the wait.
The range number that turned heads
Edmunds put a 2027 Model Y L with 20-inch wheels through its standardized EV range test and the SUV travelled 576 km (358 miles) on a single charge — 61 km further than Tesla's own 515 km estimate, an 11.8 percent overshoot. That result makes the Model Y L the longest-ranging Model Y variant Edmunds has ever tested, despite it also being the heaviest. Most EVs fall short of their rated range in real-world testing; beating the sticker by double digits is rare.
Why the L is different
The "L" stands for the stretched wheelbase. Tesla extended the Model Y's body between the axles to create a proper third row and a larger cargo area, then packed a bigger battery underneath. The six-seat layout uses captain's chairs in the second row, which makes third-row access far easier than the squeeze-through arrangement in the standard Model Y's optional third row. For Canadian buyers hauling kids, hockey bags, and a winter's worth of gear, the format finally competes with three-row rivals like the Kia EV9 — with Supercharger access as a backstop for road trips.
What it means for Canada
Deliveries in the United States are set to begin shortly, and Canadian availability typically follows within a quarter of a US launch for high-volume Tesla models. Pricing has not been confirmed for Canada, but expect a meaningful premium over the standard Model Y, which currently starts well under $60,000 before incentives. One honest caveat for winter drivers: Edmunds tests in temperate conditions, and Canadian cold cuts real-world range by 20 to 30 percent. Even so, a 576 km temperate-weather result suggests the Model Y L should clear 400 km on a January highway run — territory no other three-row EV in Canada currently reaches.
