Waymo Pushes for Alberta Robotaxi Approval as Canadian Expansion Grows

Waymo is pushing to bring its driverless robotaxi service to Alberta, expanding its Canadian ambitions beyond its planned Toronto launch in 2028. The company confirmed it is contacting officials across Canada as part of its global expansion, according to CityNews Calgary.

The Alberta push

The City of Calgary confirmed Waymo has shown interest in running its service in the city, although several regulatory hurdles remain before passengers could book a driverless ride. Following provincial approval, Calgary said it may still need to amend its Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw to accommodate Waymo's service.

Meanwhile, Edmonton confirmed the company has not contacted its Vehicle for Hire team, suggesting Calgary is the primary Alberta target.

Where things stand

  • Calgary — City confirmed Waymo interest; Vehicle-for-Hire bylaw amendment may be required after provincial approval
  • Edmonton — No contact with the Vehicle for Hire team yet
  • Alberta Transportation — Declined to discuss specific proposals under review; said applications are considered individually and the province is examining how other jurisdictions regulate autonomous vehicles
  • Toronto — Waymo has already started testing; commercial launch planned for 2028

What this means for Canada

Waymo's expansion now spans multiple Canadian cities. The company already operates robotaxi services in several U.S. cities and has announced plans for Madrid, Spain in 2027. Canada's regulatory landscape — with provincial jurisdiction over road vehicles and municipal authority over vehicle-for-hire licensing — means approvals will proceed city by city, province by province.

For Alberta, the key question is whether the province will create a dedicated autonomous-vehicle regulatory framework or rely on existing vehicle-for-hire rules. Either path will determine when Calgary residents could book their first driverless ride.
