Electric Car Insurance in Canada: Why It Costs More and How to Pay Less

Quote insurance on an EV and you may notice a pattern: the premium sits 10–25% above an equivalent gasoline model. It isn't punishment for going electric — it's math. Understanding the math is how you shrink it.

Why EVs cost more to insure

Three drivers. First, replacement value: EVs simply carry higher price tags, and comprehensive coverage insures the sticker. Second, repair economics: a minor fender-bender can mean battery-pack inspection or sensor recalibration at certified shops, and parts allocation runs through fewer channels — so claims take longer and cost more. Third, total-loss risk: when repair quotes approach battery replacement cost, insurers write the car off, and write-offs are expensive claims.

The counterweights

EVs have some safety advantages that underwriters quietly price in — excellent crash structures, low centres of gravity, and standard active safety suites. Drivers also skew to commuting in urban zones with lower collision severity. That's why the premium gap narrows every model year as insurers accumulate Canadian EV claims data.

Eight ways to close the gap

One: bundle EV insurance with home/tenant policies for multi-line discounts. Two: ask about green-vehicle or EV-specific discounts — several Canadian insurers now offer them. Three: raise the deductible if you have an emergency fund. Four: use winter tires — mandatory rating discounts in several provinces anyway. Five: quote before you buy the car; two similar EVs can differ hundreds a year in premiums. Six: usage-based/telematics programs reward the low-mileage, smooth-driving profile many EV owners already have. Seven: group rates through employer or association plans. Eight: re-quote annually — EV rates are falling as data matures, and loyalty rarely pays in insurance.

A special case: Tesla

Tesla's insurance products aren't available in most Canadian provinces, so most Tesla drivers insure through conventional channels. The Model 3 typically insures closest to its gas counterparts; the Model X and Cybertruck carry bigger premiums. Get the quote before configuring — it's the number nobody shows you in the showroom.

The bottom line

Insure the total cost of ownership, not just the premium line: an EV's fuel and maintenance savings typically exceed the insurance gap several times over. But quote before you buy, ask for every discount, and re-shop yearly while insurers figure EVs out.

Hydro-Québec Wants to Triple Wind Power — and a Coalition Is Marching for a Moratorium

4 min read

Several hundred protesters marched in Quebec City on September 7 demanding a moratorium on new wind projects and a province-wide BAPE hearing, as Hydro-Québec's plan to triple wind capacity becomes the largest near-term piece of its supply buildout for EVs and electrification.
