Tesla has set a concrete debut date for the long-delayed second-generation Roadster: October 1, 2026. The company posted a graphic to its official account on September 14 showing the date "10.01" alongside a link to the Roadster's Canadian webpage, which now displays a live countdown. For Canadian EV watchers who have waited since the original 2017 reveal, the announcement marks a shift from rumor to a scheduled launch event — but the track record of missed Roadster deadlines means cautious optimism is warranted.
What the October 1 reveal will cover
Tesla has not confirmed whether the October 1 event will put a production-ready Roadster on stage or serve as a closer look at a development prototype. Reporting from The Information in August 2026 indicated Tesla plans a demonstration involving cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX, potentially including a hover or short-flight element. MobileSyrup noted on September 14 that the demo may echo the Cybertruck's Wade-mode theatricality — impressive in a video, less certain as a production commitment.
The original 2017 Roadster concept promised 0–100 km/h in under two seconds and more than 965 kilometres of range on a single charge. Tesla accepted reservations at US$50,000 (approximately C$69,500 at current rates), but many Canadian reservations were cancelled over the years as the timeline slipped repeatedly. No Canadian pricing for the production version has been published.
Why the Roadster took nearly ten years
The delay stems from a 2022 internal pivot. According to The Information, two teams inside Tesla's design studio worked on competing concepts: one stretched the Model S Plaid architecture into a Roadster-shaped body, while the other pursued a carbon-fiber monocoque inspired by Lamborghini. Elon Musk chose the carbon-tub route and told staff to "do it correctly or not at all," which committed Tesla to hypercar-level engineering it did not yet possess. The company hired former Lamborghini body engineers, and a running two-seat prototype with butterfly doors was reportedly completed in late 2025.
What Canadian buyers should do now
Canadian consumers with existing Roadster reservations should monitor Tesla Canada's official channels for October 1 event details. If the reveal includes firm production timelines and Canadian pricing, the reservation window may reopen. Until then, treat any pre-order pitch with skepticism — the Roadster has missed multiple "coming soon" milestones, and the October 1 date itself carries risk of another slip. Buyers who want a practical EV today have far more certain options in the 2026 Canadian market, from the Chevrolet Bolt at under $40,000 to the Tesla Model Y with inventory available for immediate delivery.
