Tesla's new Accordion Supercharger design lets stations be installed between parking spaces at a 20% lower cost, but the flexible conduit shown in the debut footage may need adaptation for North American electrical codes.
Tesla Charging has unveiled another factory-built Supercharger design, this one tailored for parking lots where chargers cannot simply line a curb. Called the Accordion Supercharger, the setup ships on a truck, is lifted into position, and expands across the parking area — a process Tesla says cuts installation costs by 20 percent compared with conventional builds.
How it works
The system centers on a V4 power cabinet connected to charging posts that sit on prefabricated bases. In the reveal video, the entire assembly arrives pre-wired and is craned into place between parking spaces, then unfolded like an accordion. Tesla posted the image on X, noting that 16 stalls can be delivered in a single truck shipment.

North American fit is uncertain
Tesla did not disclose where the first Accordion unit was installed, but the footage appears to be from Europe. That matters for Canada because the conduit shown in the video is flexible — a setup that does not match the rigid tubing typically required by North American commercial electrical codes.
The Accordion design could still be adapted for Canadian and U.S. sites, but any code changes or hardware revisions would add time and cost that could erase some of the 20 percent savings Tesla is promising. Fleet operators and property developers watching for faster Supercharger deployments should treat the European installation as a proof of concept rather than a ready-to-ship product for Canadian parking lots.
Where it fits in Tesla’s lineup
The Accordion follows Tesla’s Folding Unit Supercharger and its earlier prefabricated V4 stations, which the company has already used to bring Canadian sites online in as little as four days. Together, these three approaches give Tesla a spectrum of factory-built options — from simple curb-side installs to complex between-space layouts — aimed at compressing the permitting and construction timelines that have slowed charging network expansion across the country.
For Canadian drivers, the underlying message is that Tesla is trying to turn Supercharger construction into a repeatable manufacturing process instead of a bespoke civil engineering project. If the Accordion design clears North American code hurdles, it could mean more stalls in dense urban lots and highway-adjacent plazas where available space between cars is the only option.
