Tesla Opens €100M Berlin Engineering Center, Consolidating Four Labs Into One Campus
The Berlin Tesla Engineering Center (BTEC) opened November 4 in Köpenick, combining materials, powertrain, and safety labs 30 minutes from Giga Berlin. A third R&D hub after Fremont and Shanghai.
Tesla has officially opened its Berlin Tesla Engineering Center (BTEC) in Köpenick, Germany, a facility that consolidates four previously separate engineering sites into a single campus housing 30 specialized laboratories. The company announced the opening on X on November 4, stating the project went from permit approval to operational status in under one year.
What BTEC covers
The 30 labs span materials science, powertrain engineering, vehicle development, and validation and safety testing, including airbag and battery cell testing. The facility is located approximately 30 minutes from Giga Berlin, Tesla's European production hub.
- Investment: Approximately €100 million (roughly C$156 million / US$112 million) in total capital for the conversion of an old factory complex into a modern R&D campus.
- Staffing: More than 250 employees initially, including personnel transferred from existing lab sites in Tilburg, Netherlands, and other locations.
- Expansion plans: Tesla has already applied for permits for a second phase that would roughly double headcount to approximately 500 engineers and technicians.
Why it matters
BTEC is Tesla's third engineering hub of this scale, joining the Fremont and Shanghai facilities. The Berlin team has previously contributed to the development of the Model Y, Semi, and Roadster, and that work continues at the new campus.
The opening coincides with Tesla's consideration of expanding Giga Berlin's planned annual production capacity from 500,000 to one million vehicles. A consolidated engineering center closer to the production line is intended to shorten the loop between design iteration and manufacturing validation, potentially accelerating the pace of European-specific model variants and safety compliance testing for the EU market.
