Hyundai Q3 2026: EV Sales Fall 9% as Ioniq 5 Plunges 53% in U.S.

Hyundai's Q3 2026 results show operating profit up 5.5% but EV deliveries down 9.2%. Ioniq 5 U.S. sales crashed 53% to 10,382 units. Hybrids up 3.8% to 167,414 units.

Hyundai Q3 2026

Hyundai has reported higher operating profit in Q3 2026 despite a significant decline in electric vehicle sales. According to the company's latest financial results, operating profit increased 5.5% year-over-year to KRW 2.68 trillion (approximately C$2.8 billion), but revenue declined 3.4% to KRW 45.11 trillion (C$47.1 billion), and net profit fell 24.2% to KRW 1.93 trillion (C$2.0 billion).

EV sales decline masks hybrid strength

Global wholesale volume dropped 11.3% to 920,710 vehicles, down from 1,038,353 in the same quarter last year. The company attributed the decline to fewer working days and production disruptions caused by labour strikes. Within that mix, EV sales fell 9.2% to 69,117 units, while hybrid sales increased 3.8% to 167,414 vehicles, now accounting for 18.2% of Hyundai's total sales.

U.S. Ioniq 5 collapse

The EV slowdown was particularly stark in the United States, where Hyundai reported record overall Q3 sales of 246,896 vehicles, up 3% year-over-year. Despite the record, Ioniq 5 sales plunged 53% to 10,382 units, Ioniq 9 sales declined 47% to 1,663 units, and Ioniq 6 sales fell 96% to just 107 vehicles.

For Canadian buyers, the Ioniq 5 remains a key model in the mid-size EV segment, but the U.S. sales trajectory suggests broader softening demand in the segment. Canadian EV sales continue to grow overall, but Hyundai's Q3 results signal that competition in the affordable-to-mid-range EV space is intensifying, particularly from Chinese entrants like BYD and Geely that are gaining market share through aggressive pricing.

What this means for Canadian EV buyers

  • Ioniq 5 pricing: With U.S. sales down 53%, dealers may offer deeper incentives in North America, potentially including Canada, to clear inventory.
  • Hybrid alternative: With hybrid sales up 3.8% globally, buyers seeking fuel efficiency without full EV commitment may find Hyundai's hybrid lineup more competitive.
  • Market shift: The 9.2% EV decline contrasts with the broader Canadian EV market growth, suggesting Hyundai is losing share to competitors rather than the market contracting.
