Tesla Cybercab Begins Interstate Rides in Austin — 1,080-Strong Texas Fleet

Tesla Cybercab Begins Interstate Rides in Austin — 1,080-Strong Texas Fleet

Tesla has started taking passengers on interstate highways in Austin using its Cybercab, marking a significant step for the company's autonomous vehicle program. The development was shared Thursday by a Tesla Robotaxi rider who posted an 11-second video showing a Cybercab travelling on an interstate at 55 mph (88 km/h) in rainy conditions.

While Tesla's Model Y robotaxis have been travelling on highways for some time, this is the first time a Cybercab has been observed doing so. The milestone is notable because interstate-speed operation is a key prerequisite for the broader deployment Tesla has been planning across North America.

Fleet growth

According to Texas Department of Motor Vehicles registration data, Tesla recently added another 29 Cybercabs to its Texas Robotaxi fleet, bringing the total to 1,080 registered vehicles. Cybercabs have also surpassed Model Ys in the registered Texas fleet, a first for the dedicated robotaxi platform.

Production is outpacing deployment: Tesla's Cybercab production line doesn't run every day because the company is building vehicles faster than it can deploy them to the road. This suggests a significant pipeline of Cybercabs is ready to be activated as regulatory and operational readiness improves.

What this means for Canada

Tesla has confirmed robotaxi ambitions for Canada, with Ottawa and other cities on the roadmap. The Austin interstate milestone demonstrates the platform can handle high-speed, mixed-traffic conditions — a requirement for Canadian highways like the 401, Trans-Canada, and major urban interchanges. Canadian regulators will need to approve the same capabilities before any domestic deployment.

Tesla continues to update the Cybercab passenger experience as well, including adding a rear camera view and new rider features in recent software updates.
