So you're convinced EVs are cleaner — but by how much, where you live? Here are the honest numbers, province by province, for what switching from a gasoline sedan to an EV actually saves in annual CO₂.

The baseline: what a gas car emits

A mid-size gasoline sedan driven the Canadian average of roughly 15,000 to 20,000 kilometres per year emits about 4 to 5 tonnes of CO₂ from the tailpipe alone. Add extraction, refining, and fuel transport, and the well-to-wheel total climbs to roughly 5 to 6 tonnes annually. That's the number every EV saving is measured against.

Quebec: the world-class case

Charging on Hydro-Québec's near-pure hydro grid produces effectively negligible emissions per kilometre — on the order of a few grams of CO₂ equivalent. A Quebec driver switching from the average gas sedan eliminates essentially the entire 5-plus tonnes of annual driving emissions, minus the small charging-related footprint. Over a 15-year vehicle life, that's roughly 70 to 80 tonnes of CO₂ avoided — among the largest per-vehicle climate wins available anywhere on Earth.

British Columbia and Manitoba: nearly as clean

BC's hydro-dominant grid and Manitoba's Nelson River dams put both provinces in the same league as Quebec. An EV switch in Vancouver or Winnipeg eliminates the overwhelming majority of annual driving emissions — the well-to-wheel savings land in the same 4-to-5-tonne-per-year band, with lifecycle analyses putting the total reduction above 80 percent versus gasoline.

Ontario: strong and stable

Ontario's nuclear-hydro-wind mix yields a modestly higher charging footprint than the hydro provinces, but the annual savings remain dramatic: roughly 3.5 to 4.5 tonnes of CO₂ per year versus the average gas sedan — a 70-to-80-percent well-to-wheel reduction. The nuclear refurbishment program locks that profile in for decades.

Alberta and Saskatchewan: narrower but real, and widening

The prairie grids carry the heaviest carbon intensity in Canada, so the honest math gives EV drivers here annual savings of roughly 2 to 3 tonnes — a meaningful cut versus gasoline, though not the near-total elimination of the hydro provinces. The crucial caveat: that margin improves automatically. Every wind farm and solar installation that connects, every coal unit that retires, expands the saving without the driver doing anything. Alberta's grid intensity has fallen substantially from its peak and continues falling.

Atlantic Canada: the middle path

Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and PEI sit between the hydro provinces and the prairies — grids in transition from coal toward renewables and imports. Annual EV savings run roughly 3 to 4 tonnes of CO₂, improving as the regional clean-energy projects land. Newfoundland and Labrador, with its hydro base, performs closer to the Quebec tier.

Putting the numbers in perspective

The average Canadian's non-transport footprint is roughly 10 to 15 tonnes of CO₂ per year including everything — heating, food, goods, flights. A single gasoline-to-EV switch eliminates 2 to 5 tonnes annually depending on province. Few individual decisions available to a Canadian household match that impact, and none of them also cut fuel bills by 60 to 80 percent at the same time.
