The same electric car can be a climate hero in one province and merely a solid improvement in another. What determines the difference isn't the car — it's what's on the other end of the plug.

Grid carbon intensity is the whole ballgame

Electricity in Canada is a provincial story. Each province runs its own grid, its own generation mix, and its own emissions profile per megawatt-hour. That number — grams of CO₂ per kilowatt-hour — decides how clean your EV actually is.

The hydro powers: Quebec, BC, Manitoba, Newfoundland

Quebec runs one of the cleanest grids in the world. Hydro-Québec's reservoirs supply the province with near-zero-emission power, which is why an EV charged in Montreal emits a small fraction of the CO₂ of the same car charged almost anywhere else in North America. It's also why Quebec's electric vehicle mandate — the first in Canada — had a ready answer to the "dirty grid" objection before it was ever raised.

British Columbia is similarly hydro-dominated, with wind and run-of-river capacity supplementing the big dams. An EV in Vancouver operates with a lifecycle carbon footprint among the lowest of any car, anywhere.

Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador round out the hydro club — their EVs charge on overwhelmingly renewable power, making the switch an unambiguous emissions win from essentially the first kilometre.

The nuclear anchor: Ontario

Ontario phased out coal in 2014 — the single largest climate action in North American electricity history — and now runs on a mix of nuclear, hydro, wind, and gas peakers. The result is a grid that's far from the cleanest in Canada but still well below the global average, and comfortably clean enough that EVs pay back their manufacturing emissions quickly. The province's Bruce Power refurbishments keep that baseline stable for decades.

The transition grids: Alberta and Saskatchewan

Alberta has historically been Canada's most carbon-intensive grid, powered by natural gas and legacy coal. That's changing fast — wind and solar have grown dramatically, coal retirements are proceeding, and the grid's emissions intensity has fallen meaningfully from its peak. An EV in Alberta today still cuts emissions versus gasoline over the vehicle's life, but the margin is narrower — and it improves every year as renewables claim a larger grid share.

Saskatchewan follows a similar pattern: a gas-heavy grid with growing wind and solar, plus small modular reactor plans on the horizon. The trajectory matters more than the snapshot.

The tidy grids: Atlantic Canada

Nova Scotia has moved from coal toward wind and hydro imports; New Brunswick mixes nuclear, hydro, and renewables. Both are mid-pack and improving. Prince Edward Island imports most power but hosts impressive wind penetration. None matches Quebec — none are anywhere near as dirty as the worst-faith arguments assume either.

What this means for Canadian buyers

The honest summary: in roughly two-thirds of Canadian provinces — representing well over 80 percent of the population — an EV charged on the local grid cuts lifetime emissions dramatically versus gasoline. In the prairie transition grids, it still wins the full-lifecycle comparison, with the margin widening annually. There is no province in Canada where the honest lifecycle math favours the gasoline car.
