teslaTesla Robotaxi Fleet Surges to 1,204 Vehicles in Texas, Closing in on Waymo
Tesla registered 124 new Model Ys in Texas, bringing its robotaxi fleet to 1,204 vehicles — just 55 cars behind Waymo. The fleet spans Austin, Dallas, and Houston with nearly 3 million driverless miles logged.
Tesla's robotaxi fleet in Texas has jumped to 1,204 vehicles after the company registered 124 additional Model Ys, according to Drive Tesla Canada's reporting on Texas registration data. The rapid expansion puts Tesla within 55 vehicles of Waymo's 1,259-vehicle fleet, intensifying the race for autonomous-ridehail dominance in the US.
The numbers
- 1,204 total robotaxis in Texas, up from 1,080 just days earlier when Tesla added 29 Cybercabs.
- Fleet composition: 631 Model Ys (52%) and 573 Cybercabs (48%).
- Three cities: Austin, Dallas, and Houston.
- Nearly 3 million driverless miles accumulated across the fleet.
- Waymo comparison: 1,259 vehicles — Tesla is now within striking distance.
- Next competitors: Avride operates 344 robotaxis in Texas; Zoox maintains 63.
Production outpacing deployment
Tesla has stated it is already producing more Cybercabs than it can register and deploy, and has occasionally shut down the Cybercab production line to avoid excess inventory. Drive Tesla Canada notes that registration numbers do not necessarily match road presence — not all registered vehicles enter service immediately.
What it means for Canada
While the current fleet is entirely Texas-based, the pace of expansion is a signal for Canadian regulators and consumers. Tesla has previously discussed robotaxi rollouts in Ontario, and the company's ability to scale from 1,080 to 1,204 vehicles in a matter of days suggests the infrastructure and regulatory groundwork is maturing faster than most observers expected. Canadian provinces watching the US rollout — particularly Ontario and British Columbia — will be closely monitoring whether Tesla seeks to replicate the Texas model north of the border in 2027.
