Tesla Ends U.S. Vehicle Referral Rewards — Canada Keeps Its Program

Tesla has retired its U.S. vehicle referral rewards program, replacing it with an FSD-focused rewards scheme. The Canada program is untouched, so Canadian owners can still earn Supercharging credits.

Tesla Ends U.S. Vehicle Referral Rewards — Canada Keeps Its Program

Tesla has ended its vehicle referral rewards program in the United States, retiring the long-running "Refer and Earn" cash-and-credit scheme that let owners earn up to US$250 in credits for each new Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck buyer they referred. In its place, the company has rolled out a Full Self-Driving (FSD)-centric referral program that rewards owners for bringing in new FSD subscribers rather than new vehicle buyers. The change, announced via a post from the Tesla North America account on X, applies only south of the border.

What changed in the U.S.

Under the old program, referring a buyer who purchased a Model 3, Model Y, or Cybertruck earned the referrer a US$250 credit, and the referred buyer received three months of FSD. The referred buyer's vehicle had to be a qualifying model and the referral had to complete before the program's retirement date to count.

Under the new FSD-focused scheme, owners can instead gift a friend or family member a free month of FSD through their referral link. If that person converts to a paid FSD subscription before the trial expires, the referring owner earns:

  • If the referrer subscribes to FSD: one free month of FSD per successful referral
  • If the referrer bought FSD outright: US$99 in Tesla Credits per successful referral

The U.S. program now covers only FSD and energy products (Solar and Powerwall). Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck remain eligible for loyalty benefits for repeat buyers, but the general public referral rewards for new vehicle purchases are gone.

What this means for Canadian owners

The retirement is U.S.-only. Tesla's Canadian referral program continues unchanged, so Canadian owners can still earn free Supercharging credits toward a new Tesla purchase or lease by sharing their referral link. The U.S. move is a signal that Tesla is repositioning its referral economics around FSD subscriptions rather than unit sales — a shift that may eventually reach Canada, but nothing has changed on the other side of the 49th parallel as of this writing.

For Canadian buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: the Canadian referral program is still live and still worth using. If you're shopping for a new Tesla in Canada, ask a friend or family member who already owns one to use their referral link — that's how you lock in the Supercharging credit on your purchase or lease.
