BYD's Yangwang Altior: The Rolls-Royce Rival That Debuts in Dubai, Not China
BYD's ultra-luxury Yangwang Altior sedan gets suicide doors, a gemstone grille, and a 5,500 mm body — and it debuts in the UAE around November 5, not in China. Rumored pricing starts around C$400,000.
BYD is pushing into the ultra-luxury segment with the Yangwang Altior, a flagship executive sedan that will make its global debut in Dubai — not in BYD's home market of China. The car got its name last week, and this week BYD confirmed it will feature suicide doors (rear-hinged, opening nearly 90 degrees), a dot-matrix "Gemstone" grille, and crystal-inspired headlights, according to Electrek and CarNewsChina.
What we know
- Doors: Suicide doors — a first for any BYD model. Yangwang GM Hu Xiaoqing confirmed the design on Friday, saying the doors swing open nearly 90 degrees for a "dramatic, wide-open entrance."
- Grille: Dot-matrix "Gemstone" grille with crystal-inspired headlights, shown in preview images from Yangwang's executive GM Zheng Yu.
- Size: Expected to be about 5,500 mm (216 inches) long — comparable to the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class or Rolls-Royce Phantom.
- Battery: Images of the camouflaged prototype show it at a BYD Flash Charge station, suggesting it will use the second-generation Blade Battery and 5-minute Flash Charging technology.
- Solid-state: BYD exec Stella Li said last month that the company's first solid-state-battery vehicle will debut in 2027. The Altior is the strong candidate.
Why Dubai first?
BYD has not confirmed an official date, but CarNewsChina, citing sources familiar with the project, says the unveil is targeted for around November 5 in Dubai, UAE. The choice of location is a signal: the Middle East is where ultra-luxury EVs are actually bought, and BYD is trying to establish Yangwang as a credible alternative to Rolls-Royce and Maybach in that market before it even reaches China.
Pricing context
Rumors put the Altior's starting price in the 2 million yuan range, or roughly C$400,000. For reference, Yangwang's current electric sedan, the U7, starts at 658,000 yuan (about C$125,000) in China, and the extended U8L — the brand's highest-priced mass-produced vehicle — starts at 1.45 million yuan (about C$275,000). The Altior would be a full step above both.
There is no Canadian pricing, no launch date, and no confirmation that the Altior will come to North America at all. Yangwang is not yet sold in Canada, and the brand's focus for 2026-2027 is the UAE and European markets. If it does arrive here, it would slot into the same niche as the Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and Rolls-Royce Spectre — a segment where Canadian buyers currently have very little choice.
