Tesla Cybertruck Mirror Caps Switched to Textured Plastic for Durability

Tesla has replaced the painted side mirror caps on the Cybertruck with a textured plastic finish that better matches the rest of the truck’s exterior. Lead engineer Wes Morrill shared the change on September 19, 2026, explaining the original painted caps looked good when new but were susceptible to scratches, particularly when driving through brush or vegetation. With the Cybertruck’s stainless steel body eliminating traditional body paint concerns, the mirror caps became one of the more vulnerable exterior components.

Tesla used the same textured plastic finish already found on the Cybertruck’s fenders. Morrill said the change improves durability while reducing manufacturing cost, noting it is rare to make a product better and cheaper at the same time.

Part of a broader update cycle

Over the past weeks, Morrill has shared several production improvements made since launch, including redesigned side repeater camera housings using passive airflow to keep water away from the lens, replacement of aluminum underbody panels with a new composite material, and improvements to in-house 4680 battery cells and charging firmware that have cut 10% to 80% charging time while enabling peak Supercharging speeds of 500 kW.

The Cybertruck has also seen adjustments like revised rear window switch placement by 50 millimeters after fleet data showed unintended window openings from elbow contact.

While the mirror cap change is a manufacturing update, it matters for Canadian owners who drive through brush, snow and gravel roads where painted plastic is prone to chips. A textured finish reduces visible damage and aligns with the Cybertruck’s overall stainless-steel durability positioning in the Canadian market.
