UK EVs to Overtake Petrol Cars in 2027 as SMMT Data Shows 32% BEV Share

SMMT data shows UK BEV registrations hit 32% in October, with petrol cars falling to 37.2%. At the current pace, electric cars could outsell petrol as early as this December.

UK EVs to Overtake Petrol Cars in 2027 as SMMT Data Shows 32% BEV Share

The UK's battery-electric vehicle market has reached a critical inflection point. According to SMMT data released November 5, 2026, BEV registrations jumped 32.7% year-over-year in October to 48,858 units, capturing 32% of the new car market, while petrol car registrations fell 11.6% to 56,876 units, representing just 37.2% market share.

The Numbers Behind the Crossover

The UK registered 152,730 new cars in October 2026, up 5.4% year-over-year, marking the 11th consecutive month of overall market growth. All of that growth came from plug-in vehicles:

  • BEVs: 48,858 units (up 32.7% YoY), 32.0% market share
  • Plug-in Hybrids: 22,898 units (up 30.1% YoY)
  • Petrol: 56,876 units (down 11.6% YoY), 37.2% share
  • Diesel: Down 15.9% YoY
  • Conventional Hybrids: Down 5% YoY

Through the first 10 months of 2026, the UK has registered 503,805 BEVs, up 30.4%, for a 26.6% year-to-date market share. Petrol's year-to-date share has fallen to 41.1%, down from 47.2% at the same point last year.

When Will BEVs Overtake Petrol?

Linear trend analysis of SMMT monthly data since March 2024 shows petrol share shrinking by roughly 0.5 points per month while BEVs gain about 0.36 points per month. The two lines are projected to cross around August 2027 at roughly 33% each.

However, the crossover could come sooner. BEV share spikes every December as automakers push volume to meet ZEV Mandate targets. BEVs hit 31.0% in December 2024 and 32.2% in December 2025. If December 2026 follows that pattern, BEVs could land around 37% versus petrol at 32%, marking the first time BEVs beat petrol in SMMT's headline numbers.

Chinese Brands Drive the Growth

The fastest-growing brands in the UK are predominantly Chinese. BYD registered 6,065 cars in October, up 73% YoY. Jaecoo more than doubled to 6,089 units, Chery nearly tripled to 3,707, and Leapmotor doubled to 1,773. MG was up 85%. Tesla, by contrast, registered just 282 cars in October, down 45% from 511 a year ago, though it remains up 31% year-to-date at 46,526 units.

What This Means for Canadian EV Buyers

The UK trajectory offers a preview of what may come to Canada. As Chinese EV brands gain foothold in European markets through aggressive pricing and model diversity, Canadian buyers should expect similar pressure on domestic and North American automakers to compete on price and range. The SMMT's push to relax ZEV Mandate targets signals that even in a market where EVs are about to become the majority, automakers still lobby for less regulation — a dynamic Canadian policymakers will need to watch as they consider their own 2035 targets.

EV Owners Go Back to the Dealer: J.D. Power's 2026 Canada Service Survey, in Numbers

J.D. Power's 2026 Canada Customer Service Index shows average repair costs at a record $443 per visit — $566 at dealers versus $323 at aftermarket shops. But EV and PHEV owners defy the value math: only 34% of ZEV service visits go to independent shops, versus 51% for gas cars, and 42% of ZEV owners trust dealers for complex repairs.
