Nissan's $34,998 Leaf S Undercuts Every New EV in Canada — 341 km Range, NACS Port, Rebate Eligible

Nissan Canada has launched the 2027 Nissan Leaf S, a base trim with a smaller battery and a smaller price tag: $34,998, or $37,966 with destination and fees, according to Canadian outlet DoubleClutch. Subtract Ottawa's $5,000 federal EV rebate — the S is eligible — and the Leaf S lands at under $30,000, the framing the Globe and Mail put on the launch and the lowest starting price among new battery-electric cars on sale in Canada.

The launch reverses course from earlier this year, when the entry-level Leaf appeared to be dead in Canada. Nissan had promised a sub-$45,000 trim when the third-generation Leaf debuted, then seemed to shelve it — before ultimately making it happen for the 2027 model year.

The cheapest new EV in Canada gets real equipment

The Leaf S trades a smaller 53 kWh battery and a less powerful 174-horsepower front motor for its price, with an estimated range of 341 kilometres — considerably more than a Fiat 500e, DoubleClutch observes. Nissan hasn't detailed every equipment deletion, but plain wheels and a different tail-light treatment mark the S out from upper trims.

• Charging: every Leaf, including the S, carries a NACS charge port — access to Tesla's Supercharger network — plus a thermal management system and heat pump as standard.
• Tech: twin 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and the gauge cluster, with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto standard.
• Comfort and safety: heated seats and Nissan's standard suite of active safety and driver assists carry over.

Upper trims: faster charging, higher prices

Leaf models built around the 75 kWh battery — everything except the S — now ship with an 11 kW on-board charger. Nissan says the upgrade cuts Level 2 charging times by two to three hours. Pricing for those trims runs from $48,139 for the S+ to $55,966 for the top-of-the-line Platinum+, all including destination. Every trim except the Platinum+ is eligible for the federal EV rebate.

Why a sub-$35K Leaf matters now

The Leaf S lands as pump prices pressure Canadian drivers: Brent crude traded above US$100 a barrel this week for the first time in over a month, and new hybrid and battery-electric registrations jumped 39.5 and 37.4 per cent year-over-year in the second quarter, per Statistics Canada. A 341-km EV under $30,000 after rebate is the cheapest new-electric entry point in the country — and it plugs into Tesla's Supercharger network from day one.
