Lucid Teases Cosmos SUV in New Video Ahead of 2027 Launch
Lucid Motors has released a teaser video for the Cosmos, its midsize electric SUV built on the 800-volt Atlas platform, with a claimed 400+ mile range and an estimated $50,000 starting price.
Lucid Motors has teased its upcoming Cosmos midsize electric SUV in a short video shared on X (formerly Twitter) on November 5. The 96-second clip features a brief, shadow-draped reveal of the vehicle's rear, showing the illuminated LUCID lettering flanked by slim taillights, a sloping rear window, and a roof fin. It is the first public visual of the Cosmos since its body-in-white was shown at Lucid's March Investor Day.
What We Know About the Cosmos
The Cosmos is built on Lucid's 800-volt, 69 kWh battery platform, called Atlas, which underpins the company's existing Air sedan and Gravity SUV. CEO Silvio Napoli has stated the vehicle will deliver a driving range exceeding 400 miles on a single charge — a figure that, if verified, would place it among the most efficient midsize EVs on the market.
Positioned below both the Air sedan and Gravity SUV in Lucid's lineup, the Cosmos is expected to start around $50,000, making it Lucid's most affordable vehicle to date. That price point puts it in direct competition with the Tesla Model Y, Rivian R2, and other midsize crossovers arriving in the next two years.
Production Timeline and Global Strategy
Lucid originally promised to reveal the Cosmos in summer 2026, but the timeline has slipped. The vehicle is currently undergoing validation, durability testing, crash certification, and cold-weather testing in New Zealand. Production is now targeted for 2027, and the Cosmos will be the first vehicle produced at Lucid's AMP-2 plant in Saudi Arabia — a significant milestone in the company's international manufacturing strategy.
- Platform: 800-volt, 69 kWh Atlas battery architecture
- Expected range: Over 400 miles (per CEO Silvio Napoli)
- Estimated starting price: ~$50,000 (US)
- Production start: 2027 at the AMP-2 plant, Saudi Arabia
- Current status: Validation and cold-weather testing in New Zealand
What It Means for Canadian Buyers
No Canadian pricing has been confirmed yet, but a US starting price near $50,000 would place the Cosmos in a competitive bracket for Canadian EV shoppers, particularly when combined with the federal iZEV rebate of up to $5,000 for eligible vehicles under the $50,000 threshold. If the 400+ mile range claim holds up in independent testing, it would address one of the most persistent range-anxiety concerns for Canadian drivers, particularly in colder climates.
Lucid's decision to produce the Cosmos in Saudi Arabia raises questions about shipping timelines and potential supply-chain implications for North American deliveries. However, the company's 800-volt architecture and claimed efficiency could make the Cosmos a serious contender in the midsize EV segment when it arrives in 2027.
