Ford is recalling 42,784 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles in Canada because the rear differential pinion shaft can fracture, leading to a sudden loss of motive power or unintended vehicle movement even when Park is selected. The affected model years are 2021 through 2023, and the defect involves a metallurgical weakness in the pinion shaft that can cause bending fatigue failure.
What the defect looks like
According to the NHTSA safety recall report (26V417), Ford opened its investigation after warranty claims spiked for rear differential failures on early Mustang Mach-E models. A fractured pinion shaft means the rear differential can no longer transmit power to the wheels, and in some cases the vehicle can move unexpectedly even with the transmission in Park and the parking brake released. That combination — sudden power loss at speed or unintended movement when parked — raises both crash and injury risk.

- 2021-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E (RWD and AWD)
The total Canadian recall population is 42,784 vehicles. Production dates for affected units run from March 3, 2020 to August 21, 2025. Ford says the defective pinion shaft was introduced into production on February 27, 2021 and was replaced on August 21, 2025. The root cause is still under investigation, but metallurgical analysis confirmed the fracture occurs due to bending fatigue.
What owners should do
Owners of 2021-2023 Mustang Mach-E models should watch for warning lights, unusual noises from the rear differential, or sudden loss of drive. If any of those symptoms appear, stop driving and contact a Ford dealer immediately. Ford will replace the rear differential assembly at no cost.
