teslaTesla Grok Exits Beta and Reaches Intel-Based Model 3 and Y in Update 2026.38.6
Tesla's 2026.38.6 update removes Grok's beta label worldwide and adds Grok support files to Intel-Atom-powered Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, per release notes and owner testing.
Tesla has removed the beta designation from its in-car Grok AI assistant with software update 2026.38.6, rolling the change out to all markets including Canada. At the same time, the update added Grok support files to Model 3 and Model Y vehicles equipped with Intel Atom infotainment computers, a platform that had been excluded from the feature since Grok's July 2025 launch.
What the update does
According to Tesla's 2026.38.6 release notes, the update removes Grok's beta label globally. The assistant, which launched in July 2025 on vehicles with AMD Ryzen infotainment hardware, now carries no beta designation in any market. Canadian drivers with Ryzen-based Model S, X, 3, and Y vehicles have had access to Grok since October 2025, when it rolled out alongside the 2025.38 update cycle.
Intel-Atom cars get Grok files
The more significant change is the addition of Grok support files to Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that use the older Intel Atom (MCU2) infotainment computer. These vehicles, primarily 2017–2019 Model 3 and Model Y, had not received Grok files in prior updates.
Tesla hacker and community figure @greentheonly confirmed the discovery on X, noting: "the Intel Model 3 did get them added in 2026.38 so enabling it looks feasible indeed." The files' presence suggests Tesla is preparing to activate the feature on the older hardware, though no official announcement of an enablement date has been made.
Owner testing on Intel hardware
One Model 3 owner with root access has already demonstrated Grok running on an Intel-Atom vehicle by manually enabling a software feature flag. The demonstration showed both the Grok assistant and Tesla's full-screen parked vehicle visualization working on the older hardware, with both features reportedly running at solid frame rates.
The owner's demonstration was shared on X with the question: "since Grok is cloud-based, any chance to unlock this for Intel cars? (Even push-to-talk!)"
What is not included
- Model S and Model X on Intel Atom — Grok files were not added to these vehicles in 2026.38.6
- No official enablement — the files are present but the feature is not yet activated on Intel hardware
- No timeline announced — Tesla has not stated when or if it will formally enable Grok on MCU2 vehicles
Why it matters for Canadian owners
Many Canadian drivers still operate 2017–2019 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, particularly early adopters who purchased before the switch to AMD hardware in 2020. If Tesla formally enables Grok on Intel-Atom cars, these owners would gain access to the same AI assistant features available on newer vehicles, including navigation, climate control, vehicle settings, and conversational queries.
Grok's cloud-based architecture means the heavy compute processing happens on Tesla's servers rather than the vehicle's onboard hardware, which is why the older Intel Atom platform is capable of running the feature despite its lower processing power compared to the AMD Ryzen system.
