Saskatchewan Drilling Hits Canada's Highest Natural Hydrogen Readings — and a Million Hectares of Permits
MAX Power Mining reports the highest natural hydrogen readings ever recorded at its Lawson complex in Saskatchewan after the Lawson 4 well intersected a deep crustal fault at 2,311 metres. The company also added 190,000 hectares of permits, bringing its Saskatchewan natural hydrogen landholdings to about 1 million hectares.
A Saskatchewan drill rig just recorded the highest natural hydrogen readings ever logged at the Lawson project — the strongest signal yet that Canada's Prairies may host a commercially significant source of geologic hydrogen, the zero-emission fuel that needs no electrolyzer and no electricity input.
MAX Power Mining (CSE: MAXX) reported that commercial validation drilling at its Lawson Complex 1 in south-central Saskatchewan has triangulated a large natural hydrogen system with the completion of the Lawson 3 well, and that ongoing drilling at Lawson 4 — more than 2 km farther west — has expanded it, intersecting what is interpreted as a significant deep crustal fault or conduit in the uppermost Precambrian basement, as reported by the Canadian Mining Journal.
What the drills found
- 2,311 metres: depth at which Lawson 4 intersected the deep crustal fault or conduit, right as hydrogen readings hit their highest levels ever recorded at Lawson while drilling passed from the lowermost basal Deadwood formation (~2,300 m) into the basement complex.
- 2,332 metres: current drilling depth as of September 7, with 41.35 metres of core recovered from the basal Deadwood and Precambrian basement, and another coring round in progress.
- Fractured, mineralized rock: the onsite geologist reports a highly fractured and faulted gabbro-mafic-ultramafic intrusive with abundant metallic mineralization, with natural hydrogen readings remaining very elevated.
- A possible helium bonus: 29.7 metres of core from the basal Interlake formation above the basement shows potential for a separate helium system in a carbonate sequence, similar to Lawson 3.
- Next up: the company is preparing its largest step-out hole, Lawson 5, to extend the discovery roughly 30 km northeast to the edge of the salt wall.
A million hectares staked
MAX Power also announced it has expanded its permitted Saskatchewan landholdings with eight new parcels covering 190,000 hectares, bringing its total permitted ground for natural hydrogen in the province to about 1 million hectares — a land position that signals how large the company believes the Prairie hydrogen system could be.
"This is getting even better with each well as we cut through the alkaline complex, and the major fracture zone encountered in Lawson 4 is another milestone in our understanding of what is clearly a large natural hydrogen system," chief geoscientist Steve Halabura said in the company's release.
Why a mining story matters to EV readers
Natural hydrogen — hydrogen generated by geological processes and accessed by drilling, rather than manufactured — is one of the candidate fuels for the transport sectors batteries struggle to serve. For Canadian commercial fleets, the question has always been whether hydrogen could be produced domestically at a price that competes with diesel; today most hydrogen is made from natural gas, which carries its own emissions profile. A drilled, Saskatchewan-sourced supply would be a different cost structure entirely.
The timing also matters for Canadian energy policy: the same week, a study highlighted in energy trade press found Alberta has "exceptional potential" for rare natural hydrogen, and global clean hydrogen investment was reported topping US$130 billion. For context on where hydrogen fits alongside battery electrics in this country, see our guide to hydrogen fuel cell EVs in Canada.
Caveats apply: these are early drilling results from a junior explorer, not a producing field, and commercial natural hydrogen has yet to be proven anywhere at scale. But the combination of record readings, a mapped deep-fault conduit, and a million-hectare land position makes Lawson the most concrete Canadian data point yet in a story worth watching.
