A new USPTO patent filing shows the next-generation Tesla Roadster may feature a deployable, multi-functional rear wing that folds flush with the body and retracts automatically before a collision.
A newly published United States Patent and Trademark Office filing suggests Tesla's next-generation Roadster could debut with a deployable rear wing designed for both aerodynamic performance and crash safety. The patent, spotted by Drive Tesla Canada, was published September 26 — just days before Tesla's scheduled October 1 reveal event in Waco, Texas.
What the patent shows
The diagrams depict a rear wing that folds and sits flush with the bodywork when not in use, then extends to increase downforce for high-speed stability and cornering grip. The wing can also tilt, allowing the Roadster to carry more speed through corners and accelerate out of them faster.
Critically, the patent describes an automatic retraction system tied to the vehicle's advanced driver-assistance systems. If the car detects an impending collision, the ADAS triggers the wing to fold in automatically, reducing the risk of damage and secondary complications.
Not a guarantee, but a strong signal
Companies file patents routinely without committing them to production. However, the timing — days before the confirmed October 1 debut — and the level of engineering detail (multi-position deployment, ADAS integration, crash-safety logic) suggest this is more than a defensive filing.
The refreshed Roadster has carried extraordinary expectations since its 2017 concept debut. Tesla has hinted at cold-gas thrusters developed with SpaceX that could allow the car to briefly lift off the ground, though whether that makes production remains speculative.
Reservations already open
Tesla reopened Roadster reservations on September 18. Canadian buyers face a two-step payment: a $6,000 fully refundable credit-card hold followed by a $58,000 wire transfer due within 10 days. No Canadian pricing for the production model has been announced.
