chargingVolkswagen Confirms Second-Generation ID. Buzz With Faster Charging
Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer confirms next-generation ID. Buzz moving to SSP platform with 800-volt charging and lower costs. Current model set for 2027 return to North America with updates.
Volkswagen is preparing a major overhaul of the ID. Buzz with a second-generation version expected to address price and charging speed. The confirmation comes after Volkswagen pulled the 2026 ID. Buzz from the U.S. and Canada market.
Move to SSP platform brings 800-volt charging
Speaking at the 2026 Paris Motor Show, Volkswagen brand CEO Thomas Schäfer said the current ID. Buzz is built on the wrong cost base. Volkswagen intends to correct that with the next generation.
- New platform: Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) replacing MEB
- Potential 800-volt architecture for 5–80% in ~12 minutes under ideal conditions
- Possible lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to cut manufacturing costs
- Improved efficiency targeting more driving range
The next-generation ID. Buzz is also expected to benefit from Volkswagen’s joint venture with Rivian for a new electrical architecture, enabling more advanced software features and over-the-air updates.
Physical buttons return, North American return planned
Volkswagen plans to replace controversial touch-sensitive controls with physical buttons and dedicated switches, addressing usability complaints.
The current ID. Buzz is expected to return to North America for the 2027 model year with updates before the redesigned version arrives closer to the end of the decade.
Canadian buyers have watched pricing remain a barrier despite distinctive styling and spacious interior. A more affordable replacement could give Volkswagen a better chance to turn the ID. Buzz into a mainstream electric family vehicle.
