teslaTesla Extends Robotaxi Night Hours to 11 PM in Austin — Pets on Dark Roads Remain the Blocker
Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin now runs until 11 PM, up from 10 PM. Elon Musk says the real hurdle to 24-hour operation is avoiding pets on dark roads — not lidar, which Musk still rejects. Canada still has no robotaxi service.
Tesla's robotaxi service in Austin, Texas now offers rides until 11 PM, one hour later than the previous 10 PM cutoff. Elon Musk confirmed the change on X on October 3, adding that the core obstacle to full 24-hour operation isn't sensor hardware — it's avoiding pets on dark roads.
"The main thing we're trying to solve is making sure that we don't run over pets when they're hard to see at night. Literally trying to avoid grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark."
— Elon Musk, October 3, 2026
Service hours have been a moving target
Tesla's robotaxi hours have shifted repeatedly since the Austin launch. At debut, the service ran 6 AM to midnight. By September 2025, it extended to 2 AM. But last August, Tesla scaled back to a 10 PM close across Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. The new 11 PM return is a modest step back toward later-night service.
In September, Tesla AI chief Ashok Elluswamy said 24-hour driverless rides would launch "around next month." Musk's latest update neither confirmed nor debunked that timeline.
Cameras vs. lidar: Musk still says no to lidar
When a commenter suggested thermal cameras or lidar for night vision, Musk doubled down on camera-only perception:
"Visual spectrum cameras can see very well in the dark when AI is doing the photon count analysis."
— Elon Musk, October 3, 2026
Rival Waymo uses cameras, lidar, and radar. Musk has long called lidar "a fool's errand" and maintains Tesla's vision-only approach will solve night detection through AI advances rather than additional sensors.
What this means for Canada
Canada has no equivalent robotaxi service — no city, no province, no public pilot. Ontario's automated-vehicle framework still requires safety drivers; Quebec has run only research pilots. The gap isn't technological; it's regulatory appetite and market scale. U.S. cities from Phoenix to Houston offer a faster path to revenue.
When a Canadian province does greenlight public robotaxi rides, the service pattern will likely mirror Austin: quiet beta, then sudden public launch. Until then, Canadian travelers to Texas, Arizona, or California can try it for the price of a taxi fare — and Canadian policymakers have a live case study an hour's flight from Toronto.
