Volkswagen Confirms ID. Tiguan Will Replace ID.4, Canadian Launch Set for 2027
Volkswagen is retiring the ID.4 name in favour of the ID. Tiguan, aligning its EV SUV with one of its best-selling global nameplates. The new model arrives in Europe early 2027 and Canada later that year.
Volkswagen has officially confirmed that the ID.4 will be replaced by the ID. Tiguan, bringing one of its most recognizable nameplates to its electric lineup. The new EV SUV will debut in October 2026, launch in Europe early 2027, and reach Canadian dealerships later in 2027.
Why the name change matters
The ID.4 and its coupe-style sibling, the ID.5, have recorded more than 950,000 global deliveries since 2021. But Volkswagen is shifting strategy: the ID. Tiguan leverages the strength of the gas-powered Tiguan, which has sold more than 8.3 million units globally. Combined Tiguan and Tayron deliveries topped one million units in 2025 alone.
The ID. Tiguan will replace both the ID.4 and ID.5 while sitting alongside the gas and hybrid Tiguan models in showrooms — not replacing them. This mirrors Volkswagen's approach with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, where electric variants carry familiar badges alongside their combustion counterparts.
What we know about the ID. Tiguan
- Platform: Expected to move to the MEB+ architecture
- Interior: Larger instrument display, return of more physical controls
- Exterior: Conventional door handles (replacing the ID.4's flush units)
- Battery: Entry-level versions may use lower-cost LFP chemistry
Full specifications remain under wraps — the vehicle is still wearing camouflage in public sightings. Volkswagen has not confirmed Canadian pricing or a precise launch month for 2027.
Canadian incentive implications
The outgoing ID.4 qualified for the federal EVAP incentive in eligible configurations. Whether the ID. Tiguan will qualify depends on its Canadian pricing and the program's requirements at launch. The EVAP program has a price cap of $55,000 for sedans and $65,000 for SUVs (before taxes and delivery), so Volkswagen will need to position the ID. Tiguan carefully to remain eligible.
Context: PowerCo delay adds uncertainty
The ID. Tiguan's Canadian arrival comes as Volkswagen adjusts the pace of its broader EV manufacturing plans. In September 2026, PowerCo Canada delayed the start of battery production at its $7 billion St. Thomas, Ontario plant from 2027 to 2029, citing evolving market demand and the need to align with next-generation battery technology.
