Tesla Model Y L Gets More Range and a More Powerful Front Motor in China Update
Tesla updated the China-built Model Y L with a 34 kW front motor upgrade and a 25 km CLTC range boost, but the six-seat SUV remains unavailable in Canada.
Tesla has quietly updated the Model Y L in China, giving the three-row electric SUV a more powerful front motor and a modest increase in rated range, according to Chinese regulatory filings reported by Drive Tesla Canada.
Range and efficiency gains
The Model Y L's CLTC-rated range rises from 751 km to 776 km, a 25 km improvement. Energy consumption also improves, dropping from 12.8 kWh/100 km to 12.4 kWh/100 km. The curb weight stays unchanged at 2,088 kg, suggesting the gains come from what Tesla describes as "core technology optimisation" rather than a larger battery pack.
Front motor upgraded to TL2 unit
The more significant change is under the hood. Filings show Tesla replacing the existing 142 kW front motor with its newer TL2 unit rated at 176 kW — a 34 kW increase at the front axle. The 198 kW rear motor remains unchanged. Tesla has not published updated acceleration figures, so it remains unclear how much of the additional output translates into improved performance.
Still not coming to Canada
The Model Y L launched in China in August 2025 as a larger, six-seat variant priced at 339,000 yuan. It has since expanded to much of the rest of the world. Like most of Tesla's revisions, the updated hardware could eventually make its way to Giga Texas and Fremont.
There is one notable exception: the Model Y L remains unavailable in Canada. This is because Canada's Model Y supply comes from Giga Berlin, where the six-seat variant has not yet started production.
