Tesla Adds Emergency Drive-Away to Superchargers — Free U.S. Update Lets Drivers Escape While Plugged In
Tesla has released a free over-the-air update enabling Emergency Drive Away at Superchargers in the U.S., allowing drivers to disconnect and drive off without unplugging first. The feature is designed for safety emergencies but will damage the charging cable and connector.
Tesla has begun rolling out a free over-the-air software update that adds an Emergency Drive Away feature to its Supercharger network in the United States. The feature allows drivers to shift into gear and drive off while still plugged in — the vehicle automatically releases the charge port latch and cuts power, letting the cable fall away so the driver can leave immediately.
How it works
When a driver encounters a safety threat at a Supercharger — such as an approaching vehicle, aggressive individual, or other emergency — they can now press the brake pedal, shift into Drive or Reverse, and accelerate. The vehicle detects the intent to leave, immediately terminates the charging session, releases the electronic charge port latch, and allows the car to move. The charging connector and cable are designed to detach and fall to the ground.
Tesla emphasizes this is strictly for emergencies. The company warns that using the feature will damage the Supercharger cable and connector, and the stall will be taken offline for repair. Drivers are instructed to leave the damaged equipment on site and not attempt to retrieve it.
U.S. only for now
The feature is currently limited to the United States. Tesla has not announced a timeline for Canada or other markets. Canadian Superchargers do not yet have Emergency Drive Away enabled.
The update was released on October 1, 2026, following a fatal shooting at a Supercharger station in California in late September that highlighted the vulnerability of drivers who are physically tethered to their vehicles while charging.
What Canadian drivers should know
For Canadian Tesla owners, the feature is not yet available. However, all Teslas sold in Canada receive the same over-the-air update infrastructure, so the capability can be enabled remotely once Tesla decides to expand it. Canadian Supercharger hardware is identical to U.S. units, meaning no physical changes would be required.
In the meantime, standard safety practices apply: stay aware of your surroundings, lock your doors while charging, and use the Tesla app to monitor your vehicle remotely. The charge port can still be manually released from inside the vehicle via the touchscreen or the mechanical release cable in the trunk (Model 3/Y) or frunk (Model S/X) if you need to leave quickly.
Context: charging safety gaining attention
Emergency Drive Away is part of a broader industry focus on charging safety. Other automakers and charging networks are evaluating similar features, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened discussions about safety standards for public charging infrastructure. Tesla's implementation is the first widely deployed system of its kind.
