BC Hydro Opens New Kamloops Fast-Charging Site With NACS Connectors

BC Hydro has opened a new electric-vehicle fast-charging site in Kamloops, adding four 180 kW chargers at the Superstore parking lot on Columbia Street. The station went live September 27 and marks the utility's second fast-charging location in the city, complementing the existing single charger at the Tournament Capital Centre on McGill Road.

Four stalls, eight vehicles at once

Each of the four 180 kW units uses power-sharing technology to serve two vehicles simultaneously — splitting output to 90 kW per vehicle when both posts are occupied. That means up to eight EVs can charge at the same time. BC Hydro says the chargers can add approximately 180 km of range to an average EV in about 10 minutes.

The station supports all three major connector types: CCS, CHAdeMO, and Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS). The NACS inclusion means Tesla owners can plug in directly without an adapter — a first for BC Hydro's Kamloops network.

Part of a $700M provincial buildout

The Kamloops opening is part of BC Hydro's broader plan to deploy 3,500 public charging ports by 2035 through a $700 million investment — more than tripling its current network. The utility says 200 kW chargers will be the standard for new sites, with higher-powered 400 kW units at high-demand corridors.

Last week BC Hydro opened two other NACS-equipped sites: a 400 kW ultra-fast station near Abbotsford International Airport and the first fast-charging location on Vancouver Island at Esquimalt's Archie Browning Sports Centre. With the Kamloops addition, the utility continues expanding its Fraser Valley and Interior corridor coverage.
