salesEV Sales Gather Momentum as More Affordable Options Hit Canadian Market
Electric vehicle sales in Canada are rising with 13% market share in August, driven by the federal rebate and 11 new models under $40,000. Canadian buyers show growing interest but remain unaware of affordable options.
Electric vehicle sales in Canada are gaining traction, with EVs making up 13% of all new vehicles sold in August 2026—a 47% increase over the same month last year—according to the latest data from Statistics Canada cited by Clean Energy Canada.
Provincial breakthroughs
British Columbia leads the charge, where more than a quarter of new vehicles sold in August were electric. Ontario also reached a significant milestone, hitting a 10% market share for EVs, its highest level since 2024.
Affordable options drive growth
The rebound follows a sluggish 2025 and is powered by the reinstated federal EV rebate and a surge in affordable models. As of October 2026, 11 electric vehicles are available for under $40,000 in Canada (including the rebate discount), up from just one model in September 2025. These include the Chevrolet Bolt, Fiat 500e, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Kona, Kia EV3, Kia EV4, Kia EV5, Nissan Leaf, Subaru Uncharted, Tesla Model 3 (currently paused), and Toyota C-HR.
Consumer awareness lags
Despite the expanding options, many Canadian buyers remain uninformed. Recent polling by Clean Energy Canada found that while 60% of potential EV buyers are somewhat aware of new models in the $30,000 to $40,000 range, only 20% are very aware of them. Additionally, 42% of likely EV buyers say they might wait for more Chinese EVs to become available, and 37% cite insufficient electric pickup options as a barrier.
Looking ahead
With Chinese automakers like Geely preparing to enter the Canadian market in 2027 and the Ford Fathom electric pickup set for release, the slate of affordable options is poised to grow further. Clean Energy Canada suggests this could be a pivotal moment for Canada’s EV market if awareness keeps pace with availability.
