Nearly Half of Canadians Lean Toward EVs, Price and Selection Still Hold Back Buyers
Abacus Data poll for Clean Energy Canada shows 48% EV interest in October 2026, with price awareness and charging payment preferences shaping decisions.
Nearly half of Canadians are leaning toward an electric vehicle for their next purchase, according to Abacus Data’s latest survey for Clean Energy Canada. The poll puts EV interest at 48% in October 2026, up from 45% in April.

- 48% of Canadians now lean toward an EV, up from 45% in April
- Interest is highest among 18- to 29-year-olds at 67%
- 42% of EV-inclined buyers may wait for more Chinese models; 37% cite a lack of electric pickups
- 69% want public chargers to accept debit or credit without an app
Awareness gaps
Among those not certain between gas and electric, 60% were at least somewhat aware of new EVs priced $30,000 to $40,000, but only 20% were very aware. Awareness of used EVs priced $20,000 to $30,000 was 52% overall and 14% very aware.
Broader ownership cost knowledge was higher: 69% knew EVs are cheaper to own and drive, and 62% knew about the $5,000 federal rebate for eligible new vehicles.
Market preferences
When asked about market influence, 47% supported European influence versus 21% for U.S. influence after considering effects on brands, models, sizes and EV choices.
On public charging, 69% supported requiring chargers to accept debit or credit payments without an app, rising to 75% among EV-inclined Canadians.
Abacus surveyed 2,762 adults online from September 18 to 23 and weighted responses to reflect Canada’s population.
